Universal Studios Hollywood

Universal Studios Hollywood is located right on the Universal lot just North of Hollywood Hills. The unique part of this Universal theme park is that it is a real working movie studio.

Getting to the Park

Ideally by car is best. You will take the off-ramp from the 101 freeway and then turn onto Universal Hollywood Dr.

Simply drive up and you will reach the parking toll gates.

If you want valet parking, turn to the left just before the toll gates.

Parking is $20.00 a day for general and goes up for prefered or valet.

Once at the Park

Express Passes – This is completely up to your needs while at the park. The express pass offers a shorter queue. However, if you travel in the offseason, the park is generally pretty manageable for crowds. Express passes are only good for one time per ride!

Where to Start? – I would start off in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. This is a huge attraction and the queues can grow quick!

VIP Experience

The VIP experience is the best way to see Universal Hollywood!

Features / Perks of VIP

  • Valet Parking
  • Front of the line UNLIMTED all day (Regular express pass is once per ride)
  • Separate entry to the park -Air conditioned lounge with a large continental breakfast
  • Private tour guide
  • Gourmet Buffet lunch (provided only to VIP guests – no public)
  • Behind the scenes VIP tour of the famous back lot on a private trolly – Step off and walk around movie sets
  • Go inside a sound stage and see how movies and TV shows are set up
  • Go inside the massive prop warehouse and see everything from a chair to ET!

Rides and Attractions

Upper Lot

The area you enter the park is the Upper Lot – Here you will find the Harry Potter world as well as the following;

Simpsons The Ride™ – Very similar to the Florida ride. The Simpsons ride is based on Krustyland a crackerjack amusement park owned by Krusty the Clown. You will be the first to ride the newest roller coaster in the park. But Sideshow Bob is out to kill the Simpsons. This is a motion simulator ride.

Despicable Me Minion Mayhem™ – Ever want to become a Minion? You first will be greeted by Gru and scanned. You will then enter the lab to begin your training to be a minion.

Waterworld – A action parked show that has real actors that perform right in front of you. Careful where you sit…. you might get wet or soaked!

Studio Tour – If you take the VIP tour then you don’t need to ride this. This is the tour that takes you along with 150ish other people. You are then taken down to the back lot and given the tour. You can not get off the tram during this experience. However, it is a great tour of the lot.

During the tour you will also be immersed into the movies with these added attractions;
Earthquake: The Big One
Courthouse Square(Back to the Future) -Sometimes missed on weekdays cause of taping
King Kong: 360 3-D
War of the Worlds – This is the crash site for the Boeing 747
Bates Mansion
Fast & Furious: Supercharged

***I did not include the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in here because I myself have not been back since it was opened. Let me know your experiences!

Lower Lot

This is the area you will arrive in when you take all the escalators down from in front of The Simpsons Ride.

Revenge of the Mummy™ – Just like the one in Florida but with some differences. This high-speed indoor roller coaster gives you that feeling that you are travelling through the mummy’s tomb.

Transformers: The Ride-3D™ – Again similar to Florida version you board a transporter and race around the city and you try to save the Allspark from Megatron.

Jurassic Park River Adventure™ – Similar to the one in Florida, you get into the boat and travel up into the park. You will get sprayed by dinosaurs and then as you enter the building you are then evacuated down the long drop where you are soaked.

Great tips! I wouldn’t have even considered VIP previously. Prop warehouse is my dream! I saw it in a Frankie Muniz movie growing up! 😀
